moving(changing) a partition into the extended partition

I had some extra unallocated space on my hard drive and I configured it as a
new partition. Without thinking too much about it I made it a primary
partition although I already had a primary partition.

Now I have the following: primary partition, extended partition(with 4
logical drives), and the new primary partition.

I'm thinking I might want to turn this new primary partition into the 5th
logical drive in the extended partition, but I already have some programs
installed on this new primary partition. Can this move be done? Or will I
have to delete the new primary partition(and the programs) and start again?

And does it matter which way I keep the partition configuration? I seem to
be able to install an OS on any partition (primary or extended/logical) and
boot up from it. So that's not an issue, but is there anything else that
would help me decide which way to go with this.

Unless you have a specific need I'd leave it as is. The machine always start
from the system partition (first primary active partition) The boot
partition (where the operating system files are) can be on another primary
or extended partition.

Thanks, that answers my main question. But just out of curiousity, could
this new primary partition be moved into the extended partition and become a
logical drive...is there a way to do this?

Possibly xcopy everything from old to new, then reassign drive letters using
Disk Management
