Moving back to a CRT from flat panel monitor

Booted up the old box, starts loading XP, gets to splash screen, then
goes black.

This old computer had run a flat screen before being replaced. I didn't
set the resolution back thinking I'd taken all needed files off it.
Course I found a few I forgot.
Booted to safe mode, tried setting display settings back to 640x480.
But on reboot, goes back to flat screen settings. Can't make it hold
the lower settings.

Suppose I could unhook the flat screen from the new box, set it back,
then hook up the crt, but hope someone has a quicker trick.

Thanks

Boot up the old xp machine then unplug the crt and replug it back in again.
The plug'n'play will set res back.
