I am wanting to move all my 260 webs(websites under "My
Webs") from my desktop hard drive to my external hard
drive. (running xp/2000).

What to I need to copy over besides the Web files
themsleves? There are other files that contain information
on last published and login and password info. Where are
they?

Will I be able to move my Ext Hard Drive back a forth from
my Desktop and Laptop if both have FP 2002 installed
without getting out of sync?

Thanks

You really need to publish the web from one location to another, not copy.
The hidden FP extensions files contain information the is related to the
machine the web was created on, and is never published between machine, you
need have a central location for your web, then open them on this central
location from each machine or publish down to the specific machine make your
change and them publish back.

You will need to copy the entire My Webs directory.

The last opened / published info is kept in the registry in
the individual machines. Therefore you will have to
open each web individually on the other machine.

However, if you are comfortable playing with the registry
do the following:
Run regedit and go to
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Webs]
and click once on Webs so it is highlighted.
Then click Registry on the toolbar and select Export registry file.
Give it a name and under Export Range check "Selected branch"
and then click OK. A .reg file will be saved to the desktop.
Copy the resulting file from the desktop, to the other machine's desktop.
On the other machine Double click the file to import the entries and when it
says
it is done restart the computer.

On second thought, forget the registry part,
as the entries will point to the wrong hard drive.

I want to make sure I understand. Take my webpages from
their current location (Desktop PC), publish the 260
websites to my ext. Hard drive (one at a time or can this
be done all at once ?).

The ext. hard drive will serve as my central location.

Then once on my ext. hard drive, connect to my laptop and
open each website, then conntect to my desktop and open
each site?

I copied over all 260 webs to the ext drive along with the
extensions (400+files) in the folder below:
E:\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions

Does this get me close?

When you copied the entire directory
you copied all of the files associated with each web,
such as the vti-inf files and the doctodep and deptodoc files
which maintain the "status" of the files within the web.

I just copied the Webs (My Webs) to the new ext. hard
drive. I opened one web, made a change and published to
the internet. Work work fine, it also just flag the change
I made and recognized the other pages as up to date.
Maybe since I publish to a UNIX server and do not use FP
extensions or fancy FP features it worked out OK??
