Hi

I am very confused on this issue, and i wnat to make sure understand what im doing before i attempt this, any help on this would be greatly appreciated

I curretly ahve one server acting as the only DC for the domain. The company jsut bought a new server that will be will have windows 2003 installed on it. I have been tasked with making this new 2003 server the primary and only DC for the domain, so I have to get the 5 FSMO roles off of the windows 2000 server to the 2003 server, and then demote the 2000 DC to a memeber server. The 2000 DC has exchange 2000 currently isntalled on it, and I am going to be installing exchagne 2003 on the new 2003 server

What is the best way to go about this move

should i first bring up the 2003 server, then configure it as a DC, then move the 5 FSMO roles over to it, then install exchange 2003 and move the mailboxes over to the 2003 server, then demote the 2000 server or..

should i bring up the 2003 server install exchagne 2003 move the mailboxes over, and then move the FSMO roles over to the 2003 server, then demote the 2000 server

also before i demote the 2000 server dont i have to make sure that AD is configured to use 2003? if so hpw do i do this

Thanks very ver much

should i first bring up the 2003 server,
Yes

then configure it as a DC,

Yes, you must do these two first unless you wish to LOSE the domain.
Also add the 2003 DC as a GC (before you remove that job from the
others.)
then move the 5 FSMO roles over to it, then install exchange 2003 and
move the mailboxes over to the 2003 server, then demote the 2000 server
or...

Sounds right but this is not quite so critical.

BTW, it's a poor practice to have only one DC unless you a) MUST,
and b) have TIMELY BACKUPS.

It's probably a good idea to move the FSMO roles before you demote the
server, but at least in Win2000 AD if you demote a DC which has FSMO
roles, it will first trransfer them automatically.

I meant to separate moving the FSMO from the other stuff -- although you
are correct in saying it is better to move these first, I would go even
further
and say it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED so I am very happy that
you corrected my post with the wimpy recommendation.

AFTER moving the FSMO, the following items are less critical, but
technically
the FSMO "could wait" (bad idea but possible.)

Personally I'd always move them by hand, it's one less thing to go
wrong! In the two/three times I've done similar, I've moved the FSMO
roles by hand. My colleague has done similar too, but without moving
the FSMO roles first. He also had no problems!
