When I try to open Moviemaker the following appears:

moviemk.exe - Application Error

The exception unknown software (0xc06d007e) occurred in the
application at location 0x7c812a5b.

Does anyone know how to recover from this? Is reloading SP2 a viable
fix?

Thank you.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

You can disable ffdshow by going to...Start / Run
and enter the following command::

regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"

After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:

regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"

Moviemaker was working before I tried loading some other video apps
programs (and with IE7already installed).
One or more of those must have changed some of the values in MM.

I cannot open it at all...

This did not do it. It still won't open.

No help here, either. I had tried them before.

Is it possible to simply install SP2 again? Do you think that would
work?

Thanks again.

Hard to say what will work but yes you can
download and reinstall SP2.

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

(you'll need your Windows XP Disk)

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK
