HELP! I'm making a video for my sister's graduation and
I need help ASAP. Moviemaker freezes up when I capture
video from a DV device. Also there is no sound and the
video is jerky and freezes in the timeline. PLEASE
HELP! Thanks.

Hello there,

Are you capturing the video via a firewire? If yes have you confirmed that
the firewire card is installed properly.

What format are you capturing too (DV-AVI or WMV)

What Type of computer are you using P4 or equivalent or P3? How much Ram
does it have and how much spare hard drive space do you have.

Without regard to any of the questions above, you should ensure that use of
your systems resources are minimized as much as possible. You will find
some guidance on "Speed" in the FAQ section of my website

I am using a firewire, however I'm not sure if it is
installed correctly. When I inserted the card into the
slot the instructions with the card say that a wizard is
supposed to come up, but it never did. However, my
computer recognizes it and says it's working properly. I
have a laptop and a Celeron processor and I'm capturing
in DV-AVI. I have about 13 GB left on my hardrive but I
started with 24 before I started capturing video on my
computer. I have captured a lot of video and installed
it, and it's fine in the preview window when I click on
the clips under the collections, but on the timeline and
the storyboard I have difficulty playing it back. Is
there a way to fix this without having to reload all the
video back on my computer, or is there a way to work with
what I have?

Hi There,

In Movie Maker there are two methods of displaying a video clip, these are
Preview (small window within the program) and full screen. The engines that
drives these two methods are different. The preview engine : preview window
of say 320 x 240 requires one quarter of the processing power than a full
screen where that full screen is 640 x 480. Its therefore understandable
why the preview works better than full screen (where there is a system
speed/resource issue) Whichever engine is in use, Movie Maker will attempt
to maintame the frame rate at the expense of the next frame to be
displayed. (Some call it Just in Time Processing) If Movie maker sees that
displaying the next frame will cause a slow down it will abort showing that
frame so that the one after that can be displayed on time.

All of this indicates a strong possibility that your system is hard up for
resources. Laptops were not designed for this kind of work, but you can get
them to do it. On my website there are some hints and a link for laptop
users explaining in more detail what you should do
