Can someone tell me is it possible to save the .wmv file on to a CD without
an additional translation step so that I can play the movie back on my TV via
my standard DVD.

If this cannot be done can anyone tell me what format I need to translate
the .wmv file into? Do I have to save this in a DVD format or can I use a CDV
format. I know these questions may seem very basic but this is early days for
me using this format.

A vcd is an mpeg1 file
svcd is a form mpeg2 file
dvd is an mpeg2 file.

You need an app to make one of these, vcd's / svcd can use a something like
TMPGenc to do the converting and burning, but dvd needs an authoring app to
make the disc properly.

See www.dvdhelp.com for lots of info on this topic.

A further hint. Compressing a compressed file is not good. WMV is highly
compressed. Mpeg1/2 are compressed. DV-AVI is the least compressed you will
get, so when saving your movie to MM always use this option if you have a
firewire connected digital camcorder.
