Movie only saved as TMP - how do I get it back???

I've been editing a Windows Movie Maker project. Thing is it only saved it as
a WMT.tmp or TMP file and not WMM file. Any ideas how to find and open it
again?

Do you know how to import a WMT.tmp or TMP file into Windows Movie Maker?
I've been working on a project that apparently was only saved as a WMT file!
I've been having a prob saving the video I'd edited. Every time I went back
to carry on with the edit I have been clicking on the 'File' drop down list
of most recent project files, which then opened up the project for editing ok.

Only now I realised that it didn't seem to be saving as a normal Windows
Movie Maker file or .MSWMM file, but only a WMT.tmp text file!

As a possible indicator of probs, a pop up box kept popping up saying
'Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low', and system was expanding to
resolve the prob, on several occasions. Is this a RAM issue? Not enough RAM
maybe? I currently am running on 512Mb RAM. I suspect as it was only saving
project as a TMP file, this related to the fact it was limited to a certain
file size. I guess!

I tried to see if deleting some older WMM project files might help. With
doing this though, I couldn't then find the project file I was editing, as it
obviously had disappeared from the most recent project file list (from the
'File' drop down menu), being replaced by the most recently accessed files -
the ones I accessed in order to delete. I therefore lost the shortcut the
drop down list from 'File' menu was using to import the project. Really don't
think I deleted the project file itself. Looks like it was never saved as a
proper WMM file, just a TMP, so that's what I'm left with, and can't get WMM
to read.

I can see the WMT.tmp or TMP file (actually WMT1.tmp) in 'My Videos' folder,
and it has my project title within it. But Windows Movie Maker will not
recognise it or allow me to import it due to having lost the shortcut link
which it seemed to require to re-open it.

Any suggestions on both getting hold of this file to open or convert to open
into Windows Movie Maker editing prog? And also do I need to increase my RAM
size to resolve the low virtual memory prob? And are the two related?

I really don't want to lose all the work I've put into this, and would
really appreciate any help as soon as possible. Many thanks.

Hi Paul,

Apparently the rendering operation was interrupted by someone or something
(most likely the virtual memory issue) and never finished creating the
movie. Movie Maker has no way of opening and finishing the TMP file so that
particular file is useless.

You can manually adjust the virtual memory size in
Control Panel > System > [Advanced] > {Performance Settings} > [Advanced] >
{Change} Virtual memory. Right now it is set to System Managed Size and you
can set a Custom Size larger so you don't have the low virtual memory
problem but I am not sure that is the direction to go here. Instead I would
split the project into pieces rendering them separately. (See my website for
step-by-step instructions to do this)

The project isn't in the "Recent Projects" list but by File > Open Project
it should be there if you saved it before rendering your movie.

Many thanks Wojo for your reply. As I say, it seems I never saved the project
properly as I was part way through the edit, and only saved as a TMP, so it
isn't rendered. Looks like I've lost the whole edit then I guess! Hours -
actually days of work there! The TMP file is useless to me then it seems from
what you say. Oh well, start from scratch. Well thanks for your valued
contribution. Many thanks. Paul.

Maybe somebody else has some better information but as far as I know TMP
files are only used during rendering. The video is rendered to a TMP file
then transferred to the location you specified in the save movie wizard.
To save an actual project you simply click the save button on the toolbar. I
may be wrong but doing that should not create a TMP file for any reason.

Hmmm, interesting. Confusing! So sounds as though it did render from what you
say. Can't think how I've lost it then. Very strange. As you say, hopefully
someone may be able to throw some light on this. I'll certainly keep the TMP
file unitl in the hope it could be useful in some way. Otherwise I'll have to
start the re-edit soon. Many thanks again Wojo.

Why would it autosave it and not be able to open it ? Same problem here. It
shut down and where did the video go. Autosave? Where. Poorly executed
program when it works it works well wen it doesn't it doesn't. 2% cpu usage
and it is halting and stalling and acting like an old fart going uphill,
amusing, if it weren't for the time that is wasted using it.

In the end I re-edited and cut my losses - well I lost my cuts so that was
that. I push the program to overload I think and this is the problem. I'm
doing lots of slo-mo edits with dissolves and there's only so much of this it
can take. Now I edit the slo-mo sequence seperately and its fine - as long as
I don't make the slo-mo sequence too long! On the whole the program does work
fine but like anything else it has its limits so I've just learnt to cope
with that and modify my editing accordingly. Besides, it has taught me to be
a tighter editor!

Cheers to one and all for your help.
