I am trying to download video from a Panasonic NV-GS11 to a Dell computer. I
have connected using a USB port. When I try to capture I get the message 'A
video capture device was not detected ...' Any help on where to start
appreciated.

Hi Michael,

I had the same problem and asked the same question. Basically the USB
connection is not fast enough to capture video from camera to pc via the USB
connection. You will need a firewire card and cable. Both are fairly cheap.

I did this and it now works just great!

Good luck :-)

The USB port on your model is for webcam capabilities, it's not a good idea
to capture using it. The USB option wasn't designed for this; and the
firewire option gives you a much greater resolution and audio quality. But
don't be surprised to discover that your video's interlaced. That's normal;
you need to de-interlace the feed after you're done capturing.

Tip: Change the audio recording settings on your camera from 12-bit to
16-bit. 12-bit sometimes causes random sound problems AFTER you finish
capturing.

Capturing thru 1.1 or 2.0 USB requires a capture device to convert it to
digital. This may or may not be a problem for WMM depending on what
manufaturer it is. WMM recognizes SOME, not all. I have 3 hardware capture
devices, but WMM only reads from one of them. Also, what I have found is, the
capture devices that are analog USB will be smaller windows anyway, at the
the very best 640X480 using the manufacturers versioning software. Then you
have to load it into WMM. This may or may not work...Some are very
proprietory. Considering that, and knowing the NTSC standard is 720X480 is
enough reason to go firewire. Sort of depends on what you want to do
though.....
