movie maker wont recognise my footage

hello. I am completly new to making and editing footage to go on to a dvd.
I recnetly purchased a video camera (stores the footage on a hard drive) I
have transfered it onto my computer however when i try to access it with
movie maker to make a dvd, the program wont let me access it. has any one
got any suggestions
