Movie Maker will not compute clips

My copy of Movie Maker (updated to version 2) does not
automatically produce clips when I request them. This is
the case when I import a new video from my camera, from my
hard disk or request clips from an existing video. When I
request clips, a status window appears for the expected
period of time, as if clips are being computed, but
nothing results. As far as I can see, there is no way to
deinstall and reinstall the software, so I am at a loss to
see what I can do about this.

Hi there,

The mechanism used to determine whether a clip has ended and another
begun is one of two methods. The first relies on there being present a
time/date stamp in the video. Obviously when there is a break in the time
line then that's where one clip ends and the other starts. The second is not
so reliable, it uses an algorithm which decides whether there is such a
significant change in data as to suggest that the camera recording was
stopped and then restarted. So from this are you first of all happy that at
least one of the two conditions mentioned above actually exist.

With regard to the creation of clips. Nothing actually happens to the
video file itself. What occurs is Movie Maker makes a small database which
contains info on where the clips start and end and consequently their
duration. Looking at the original file will reveal none of this.

If this does not help, please add any further thoughts and we will try
again :)

Thanks for the above reply. I see now that the problem I
have is the video source. I am importing one continuous
digital video (of a theater production) and was expecting
it to be broken into scenes based on the content changes
rather than time stamps. Wouldn't it be nice if one could
chose the clip generation algorithm and not have it fixed
by the source type?

Hi there,

Oh absolutely. More advanced packages can do that. My MovieDV Ver 6 program
says it can...but I have never tried it. I actually prefer the simple way of
Movie Maker for that.

Anyway, glad the overview is now clearer to you (When I first used Movie
Maker I made the same assumption about clips that you have...and I suspect a
good many others have as well)

Colin,
Try the following:
- Once you have imported the clip. Right click on it in the collection.
- In the context menu that appears, Choose "Create clips". This forces the
clip detection algorithm and will likely creates a few clips.

Hi there,

The issue here is not whether that option works...the issue was an
understanding of whether individual files containing each clip would be
created...that answer as you will see has been given
