movie maker just closes when I try to save my file

I am using movie maker to import two files, a jpg and a mpg. Some of my
files are fine, but some just crash the program. Movie maker just shuts down
when I'm in the saving file stage. I get a few seconds of the file converted
to a wmv. There's no problem with what it's done but it just stops a few
seconds in. I've not got a problem with network space, and the files don't
appear to be corrupt in any way, they run fine outside of Movie maker. The
mpg file is a result of me converting a vob file using DVD decrypter to
chapterise my original DVD. The version is 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111
Service Pack 3). Thanks.

Movie Maker has issues with .mpg files.

Maybe you could use Windows Media Encoder
to convert the .mpg to .wmv and then import the
..wmv into Movie Maker.

How do I convert other video file formats to WMV?

I too am recently having trouble with the same version of movie maker... it
came with my HP Pavillion... isn't there an update or something some where?
How do we get this thing working again... is there a one click fix for this
issue with service pack 3? I have vacation videos to edit !!!

Yep, follow John's instructions. MM 2.1 with XP does not work with mpeg
files, so convert to wmv. Jpeg's can also cause trouble, so I'd use bitmaps.

Movie maker crashes on saving my movie. It gets to 36% and then gives me the
generic msg that I should "check my destination/ origin files and check if I
have enough space...." etc. I am using WMV files and using MM2.1 How can
this be fixed??????????? Treid using a different qsef.dll file and no
cigar......
