Is there any way to cut the middle section of a clip without splitting the clip and then trimming to beginning or end point? In other words, can you select a section of a clip and then delete it?

Hello there,

Yes. Position the time cursor at the point where you want to start the delete
and cut it using the cut Icon (Under preview window) Move the cursor to the
second position and cut there as well. Now select the middle bit and delete it.

split it twice and delete the middle section you didn't want

If you will excuse me butting in John, does this delete that segment out
of the original AVI? Or does it just instruct WMM to ignore that
section when it writes its output file?

Nothing you do in Movie Maker will ever alter in any way the original source
file. When you look at your source file in Movie Maker (The Collections
listing) all you are actually seeing is a record of information out of a
database file created by Movie Maker. Deleting entries in the Collection or by
creating your own clips and then deleting segments has any effect on the
original.

As you correctly surmise...Movie Maker ignores the bits you delete.

Ahhh thanks - great relief, as I have been making a duplicate of the AVI
file to use for editing, and that practice has rapidly filled my 120gig HD!

David - who can now throw away all those duplicate AVI files (but keep
the extra 180 gig HD he bought because of running out of HD space)

Hello there,

Its very easy to assume that you are making changes to the actual file. Glad
its all cleared up for you.
