I have my Hitachi video camera (model VM-H835LA) attached to my laptop via
the S video cable, but Movie Maker does not recognize the camera.

Hi Kim,

What analog capture device are you using?... that model camcorder is a Hi8
analog one and needs some kind of capture device.

What are you connecting the S-video cable to on your computer? If it's the
output from your video card it won't work because S-video is usually a
one-way street, intended to display video from you computer, not get it in.

The S-video on your laptop, as it is with all laptops, is an output only.

You are in over your head here.

Perhaps it is time to start by reading the manual that came with your
computer.

Your laptop has no analog video inputs.

If your camera has Firewire output, and your laptop has a firewire input,
you may be able to transfer video into your computer.

Perhaps you could find someone locally who has a little more knowledge than
you to help you. You might see if there is a PC users group in your area
and attend one of their meetings...then see if anyone form the group will
help you.

In closing, you should know that 90% of the laptops available today are
completely inadequate for serious video capture and edit. the hard drives
are too slow and too small, they generally have less memory than a desktop,
and the processors and front side buses are usually slower.

Bobby,

You shouldn't be so critical and blunt. Lots of people
are 'in over their heads' when it comes to video and
computers in general. Thats why they come to a discussion
group like this. I read the same questions over and over.
I joke with a buddy of mine who works in instrument
service doing phone support how the answer to most
questions should be RTFM. Same answer as yours except I'll
let you figure out what the F stands for. However if the
likes of Papajohn, Cari, Graham, Rehan, John Kelly and a
few others can continually type the same answers over and
over and be polite and helpful about it and point people
in the right direction, then so should a part time poster
like you, without implying that people have no clue what
they are doing. People come here to be helped, not
ostracized for their lack of knowledge. Maybe you didn't
mean it to sound that way but the first few lines of your
response gave me this impression.

Great reply, I bought a PCMCIA or PC CArd fire wire/USB card for my wifes
laptop and it works great for transfering video from the cam. They are about
$30 and very easy to instal. there are also a lot of small input capture
devices available for under $100.
