Movie Maker Crashing

I converted some standard PAL DVD footage to mpeg1 for use with MM, it allows
me to import the video clip but when I try to put it into my timeline MM
crashes out with no specific error message.

Would it be better if I converted to Mpeg2? Any help gratefully received.
