Movie Maker is a component of Windows
and does not show in Add-Remove programs.

You fail to mention your OS...if you are
running Vista...disregard the following.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

John: I have the same problem. Movie Maker will attempt to open and I get a
"Sorry I have to close" message. In the details of the error message, it
states Applet Version 2.0.3312.0 Module name qedit.dll. I am using Win XP
Home with all updates. I do not use IE 7 due to its other problems. When I
open Tools/Options, I do not have a Compatibility Tab. Any Ideas? thanks.

When you go to Tools / Options in Movie Maker...
do you have a compatibility tab? If you go to Help /
About...what is the version number for Movie Maker?

Maybe the following links will offer some ideas:

do you have a compatibility tab?>>> No Compatibility tab is visible.
what is the version number for Movie Maker?>>>Version number is 2.0.3312.0

I tried the tip about Intervideo. I do have Intervideo installed, but when I
renamed the folder as the tip instructs, nothing changed. thanks.
=====================================================

I'm using XP with SP2. After installing IE7 WMM failed to start (with
Microsoft's "sorry for the inconvenience" message). I also have Intervideo
WinDVD installed that some other posts have mentioned as contributing to this
problem.

Various posts have suggested the following as fixes:
1. Reverting to IE6
2. De-installing WinDVD
3. Deleting the 2 copies of qedit.dll and then VERY QUICKLY starting WMM.

I have not tried 1 or 2 but 3 did work for me (but you have to be quick).
For convenience I created a short batch file on the desktop as follows:

del c:\windows\system32\qedit.dll
del c:\windows\system32\dllcache\qedit.dll
c:\program files\movie maker\moviemk.exe
(paths are correct for my installation, but may need modification on other
PCs)

So now I just have to run this batch file by double clicking its desktop
icon and WMM runs fine.

Windows appears to re-instate the deleted qedit.dll files very soon after
WMM has started.

Weird, but it works (for me anyway).

I had the same problem with Moviemaker it crashed on startup and looked for
the QEDIT.DLL. I took your advice and removed IE7 and Moviemaker worked fine.

How can I stop Windows from updating from six to seven, but still get any
other
Windows updates?

Or

Is there now a fix that will correct this problem with IE7?

that you have posted.

I get it to work by deleting the qedit.dll file and quickly starting Movie
Maker 5.1. But when I close and restart Movie Maker, it crashes with the
same error about qedit.dll. The qedit.dll file regenerates itself.
