It could be a lot of things
You may have a bad firewire cable which is easy to determine by trying
another or, if you don't have another one, taking the camera to your local
computer store where they usually would be happy to try a cable for you
You may have a bad firewire port or expansion card which again is easy to
determine if it works on another computer using your cable
Or it could be a software issue. Open Device Manager from Control Panel ->
System and see if it shows a conflict in the firewire card/port. Check the
manufacturers website for driver updates
Make sure the port is free of dust
Or, worst case scenario, the port on the camera itself is bad
Does Windows itself recognize the camera when you plug it in? Is there an
icon in the taskbar indicating that it is "Safe to Remove the device"? Is
there an audible indicator from XP when you plug the camera in signifying
that the operating system knows you plugged a camera in

Movie Maker cannot find capture device
My copy of Movie Maker is unable to capture movie files from my camcorder.
This is a fairly recent problem for me. I connect my Camcorder through a
Firewire card
What could be wrong? Earlier this week I tried to download these clips, and
I got a prompt box in Movie Maker saying that the capture device is not
installed or working properly, What do you think happened?
