When I go to publish the movie to my computer, I get the error that "some
source files cannot be found." However, the single source file I used is
exactly where it is supposed to be (no red Xs on the timeline--haven't moved
the file since import).

I went so far as to completely redo the thing to see if that would resolve
it, but to no avail.

In previous Movie Maker editions there were a lot of compatibility issues,
and some of them would prompt this message. Is that what is going on here?

The source is an .avi file, so it SHOULD work. What is the deal.

yes, the issues in Vista are the same as or similar to those in XP

An avi file can be compressed with any number of codecs, some or many of
which don't work well in Movie Maker. Motion JPEG files are .avi, one the
common ones from todays cameras, some of which work OK in Movie Maker and
others don't.

The Problem Solving > Can't Save a Movie page of my website covers Vista
also.

Oh, and now I just tried putting a new file in to movie maker and publishing
it before I clipped out some parts and it went to the progress bar. I
stopped progress on it and then clipped it up and tried it again. I get the
"source files" error before reaching the progress bar.

Grrrr...

that's one sign of a file that won't work well in Movie Maker.... probably a
codec issue
