Movie Maker 2 reinstall

My XP Movie Maker 2.1 will no longer run. When it starts an error screen
comes on from Microsoft and states it has to shut down the program. There is
an debug option but this does no good.

I have the sp2 disk in which the program is suppose to be, but after
reviewing the disk, I do not see it.

All I want to do is to try and reinstall the program.

Can any one help.

I have the same problem. When I try to download SP2 I am told my PC already
has it. Usually an installation can be put on top of a previous one, but not
here. There seems to be no way to repair MovieMaker when it goes pear-shaped,
like crashing every few minutes!

After reviewing several different Movie Maker sites on Microsoft.com, I see
there are 3D Movie Maker notes on the files that are included on a CD. How
can one obtain this CD or download it? I can not fine any links for doing so.
Also, can one just get the movie maker 2.1 files or an exe just to reinstall
it?

The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

(you'll need your Windows XP Disk)

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK

XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

Just some more thoughts on the subject.....

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

(927177) How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177/en-us

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

John, both sp2 and ie7 where on my computer prior to the problem starting. I
believe somehow either during an install or removal of programs ,has caused
the problem. But I have been unable to correct it by back tracking. MS
restore does not work, and is activated. So much for that!

I can open MM2, but can not do anything in it as long as the MS error box is

John, I tried the c/windows/inf process. All works correct except that the
disk they ask for is the xp sp2 disk, not my xp pro disk. And the sp2 disk
does not have any i386 file with any mm 2.1 file in it? Notr are there any mm
2.1 files on the cd that I can see.

John, I also followed the wesite you gave. Went through the manual process of
registering all files listed.

Still having the same problem. Something has corrupted MM2 and I can not
figure out what has caused this. I went as far as sending the log to MS, but
that doesnt go very far, and we never hear from them on these logs sent.

No one knows you system and all I
can do is offer the info I have available.

Personally, I would uninstall IE7 but
you may be correct that it would not
make a difference.

Did you disable ffdshow?

WMovieMaker was closing with the "classic error" box immediately after
opening. After reading these posts I uninstalled IE7, and now it's OK. A
very easy fix for the problem. BTW, this is not the only conflict with IE7.
My HP scanner wasn't workng after IE7 installation. HP support sent me a
patch as soon as I contacted them. Too bad Microsoft hasn't figured this out

Thanks for all the info John. I had over looked removing IE7. And that was
the cause. Also, I did disable ffdshow first and that made no difference. I
agree with jwinnart, MS needs to do something about that.

I had the same problem with XP Movie Maker and uninstalled IE7 now running on
IE6. MovieMaker now works on my computer. Like others have said already, Why
doesn't Microsoft fix this known problem with IE7". Maybe they're too busy
with VISTA and that mess.
