Hi
I have tried to download movie maker 2.1 (I seem to have 2.0) from
Microsoft, but I get into a loop where I can only download it with XP pro
SP2.
I am already running XP pro SP2, so M/S will not let me download it, so I
tried to reload SP2, and all attendant files from the original CD and
running SFC /SCANNOW.
Windows XP keeps telling me that the CD I have loaded is not Windows XP pro
SP2, but it is, and it is a genuine CD.
Where can I download MM2.1 from?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you right click your My Computer icon and
choose...Properties...do you see the following?

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Three possible solutions...good luck:

1) ===
The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

(you'll need your Windows XP Disk)

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK
===

2) What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

3) You can download WinXP SP2 from the following
site...then you can install from your hard drive instead
of the net.

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

Hi, and thanks very much for you solutions.
The one I tried, and which was successful, was right clicking on the
Moviemk.inf and "forcing" the installer onto the I386 folder
This re-installed moviemaker 2.1.

However, moviemaker still will only allow me to make one change to the
project while editing, and I have to save every time I move a scene onto the
time line, or use the cut to edit a scene. It is really annoying, and there
does not appear to be a solution when I report the error.

I am using moviemaker in preference to Pinnacle Studio 9.4, as I can edit
the videos in Studio without a problem, but it fails to render. (just stops)

If I can get no improvement with Movie Maker, I shall go back to Studio.

Regards

Richard

You're welcome.

Thanks for the feedback.

FWIW...video editing applications run best on a
machine that is well maintained and fully updated.

You could be reaching the limits of your system
resources. Running Error Checking, Defrag and
Disk Cleanup on a regular schedule might help.

And...disconnecting from the net and closing all
programs including your virus scanner before
opening Movie Maker may free up some resources.

Adding more RAM, increasing the size of your
Paging File and maintaining a hard drive that
has 50% or more free space can help.

And you may have compatibility issues with your
source files...the following article may be useful:

File type compatibility with Movie Maker

It's also possible that you have an issue with a
corrupted or outdated video driver.

Try reducing your Graphics Hardware Acceleration
as per the instructions in the following article.

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues

(scroll down to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP)

If it improves the issue, you need to search the
support website of your Video adapter's mfg. for
an updated video driver.

Hi, and thanks for all the information
My computer is a little aged, it has an Athlon XP 3200+, 2.5Gb Ram, and
160Gb hard drive, with 80Gb backup drive. It is fitted with an NVIDIA
GeForce FX5700LE graphics card (128Mb RAM) in its 8x AGP Slot. It is well
maintained, defragged weekly, and the 4Gb Paging file is on the reserve
drive, for speed. I think it more than meets the minimum spec for Windows
Movie Maker.
Thanks for your help, though.

My reply to you was not intended to be an attack
but I see you felt the need to defend your computer.

However...since you are experiencing issues with
two very different video apps...Movie Maker and
Pinnacle...I would still suspect resource issues.

Sorry for wasting your valuable time. Good luck
finding the solution.

Ho John
Sorry that I was a little terse, but I was being hassled at the time and
could only write the minimum.
It is most kind of you to assist me with my little problem. I feel now that,
although Moviemaker keeps crashing, it is usable enough to enable me to edit
the DV avi files on my hard drive, thus freeing up a little more space.
I have a 300Gb drive on order, so that will no doubt help.
As it happens, you are probably right that it is a hardware resource
problem, particularly the hard drive, as Studio was managing to render about
30mins of film before, and now it is down to about 2 mins, as the number of
films to be edited has increased.
Still, I am managing to create the DVDs that I want, and getting the old
files off the computer.
Thanks again for spending your time answering my queries. All the best

Richard
