I am trying to create a movie using Windows Movie Maker - every time I try
and 'Save Movie File' (and it does not matter what quality settings I choose)
the saving movie 'time remaining' figure just keeps incrementing, and the
percentage complete never gets above 3% (I have left it running for 12 hours
with no imrovement).

My laptop specs are:
3.20GHZ P4 (Mobile) CPU
1.50GB of Ram (2G Pagefile)
13G free diskspace

Can anyone give me some ideas as to what could be my issue, or how I could
resolve this issue.

Well, I have an idea, it may not works, it it's worth a try. If you have
WMM2, it'll give you the option to write to a CD-R\CD-RW, so click that and
put a blank cd in you burner (assuming you have one). This runs a bit faster
and feels less claustrophobic to your computer, which I have found greatly
helps. Of course, in WMM1, you don't have that option, so I'd try updated
(updated alone my solve the problem, *if* your running WMM1).
P.S. You may also want to try saving to a secondary harddrive (not to
mention moving less used data to a secondary harddrive, 'cause 13GB is
cuttin' it kinda close!)
