Dave

I downloaded an AVI movie. When I play the movie using windows media
player I get perfect sound, but the movie doesn't show up on the screen.
All I get is kaleidoscope or psychedelic type figures. No movie ever
displays. Do any of you know how I can correct this so I get my movie to
play? Thank you for your help.

You need to download the correct video codec - try installing the K-
Lite Codec pack (do a quick google for it, as it's available
everywhere).

Or, you could use the free VLC Video player instead, as that has most
codecs already.

You may have on-board software or codecs that may be interfering with WMP.
Also, to test the integrity of the AVI that you had downloaded, trying
playing it with Gom player. (Yahoo or Google GOM Player. It's freeware and
works well.)

There's over 800 codecs that that file might use. There is no absolute
magic bullet.

You need to know what codec the file uses. In the past, content providers
would let you know what strange codec they were using if they were going to
use strange codecs. Now you're expected to figure it out yourself.
Helpful. =\

You can use WMP's Web Help from the Error dialog to get the fourCC of the
missing codec.
