Movie Converter

I recently purchased the following product:-

It only recognises some soft of movie file called MPEG-4.

Could anybody give me any advice about converting files to this format? Say
for example, I have a DVD and want to save it to the player? How would I go
about converting it? Likewise, how would I convert MPEG and AVI files?
Ideally, I'd love some freeware that did this for me.

MPEG-4 aka DivX

For DVD to DivX/XviD - AutoGK does it for me, painlessly:
