I would like to know if I can cut clips from a movie and save them as
separate movies in WMM.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Yes...after dragging the movie to the timeline...
just split the movie on both sides of the portion
you wish to keep and right click / delete the
unwanted portions. Then save the project as
you normally would in the .wmv or .avi format.

FWIW...the splitting and deleting you do on the
timeline does not affect the original file.

More info on splitting:

"Splitting A Clip In MM2.1"

Drag the video/audio clip to the
Timeline.

Play the video/audio by clicking the
"Play" button under the view screen.

You will see the Playback Indicator
(vertical line) advancing across the
timeline.

Click the "Pause" button at the point
where you wish to trim and type...
Ctrl+L or click the "Split" button at the
bottom of the view screen.
(you can also make adjustments by
dragging the Playback Indicator)

Make as many splits as you want and
remove the unwanted clips by right
click / delete.

And...Movie Maker 2.1 only displays every
other frame. In order to see all frames, the
following info from PapaJohn may be useful:

===

Movie Maker 2 shows you every-other-frame
when doing project editing. MM1 and Movie
Maker in Vista show you each frame.

It's usually not a problem when skipping over
the in-between frames, but sometimes you
notice a flickering frame in a clip that is a 'stray',
and you can't see or cut it out.

If you apply the Slow - Down - Half video effect
to a clip in the timeline, you are then seeing
each frame rather than every other one. You
can see the problem frame and split it out.
Then remove the effect from the clip to return
it to normal.

I came to this forum with the exact same question as brickman. I believe the
answer we are looking for is how to save a clip as a separate movie (a clip
that was created from a source movie and is now only a portion of that
movie). I've done this and I've been unsuccessful at saving the clip as a
separate movie.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide the steps to do this.

My question is: What format does the source video use? s it AVI? MPG?
Some other?

If MPG, and using Windows XP MovieMaker, you need to convert it first.
See PapaJohn's website for this. The site is http://www.papajohn.org/.
Careful! if you type in http://www.papajohn.com you'll get the pizza
place instead (although not a bad idea while doing some extra work on the
PC). Look at the menu on the left hand panel, click on Import Movie
Source files, then click on Video. You'll get a list of file formats. Select
the one corresponding to the video format of your source file.

Hope that helps, Saga

Thank you Saga. I'll need to be more specific. Here's what is going on:

I have an very large mpg file that I would like to separate into 2 files,
i.e. 2 halves.
I've successfully imported the file into WMM (XP Home).
I then moved the file down to the Storyboard portion of WMM.
So now I have the original complete file showing in the upper portion of the
WMM screen AND the file down in the Storyboard.
I then split the file into 2 clips on the Storyboard. Now I have 2 clips
showing on the Storyboard...the 1st clip is the 1st half, the 2nd clip is the
2nd half.
Now I'd like to save each half into a separate file on my computer.
I'd tried the 'Save Movie' function but it saved the entire movie. I cannot
get just 1 half of the clip to be on the Storyboard, with the other half off
the Storyboard.
My whole purpose is to split the large file into 2 smaller files so they
will fit on a DVD in high quality. Currently it will not fit (2 hrs 37 min).

I would convert my MPG file to AVI before putting it in MM - use
Virtual Dub-mpeg2 as described in Papa John's web site. In the
option list under Video, click on MPG and the info there will surely
be helpful. Regards, Saga
