I am trying to insert a movie clip into a presentation. I am using the
'Insert Media Clip' button within a placeholder. The clip (a .mpg file)
appears to insert okay, and I get a message asking whether I want it to run
automatically or on mouse click. However, whichever option I choose, when I
go back to my presentation the placeholder is filled with black, and I can't
get the movie to run. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks. Sue

Hi Bonnie

That sounds like a file path length issue: try creating a folder on your C
drive (e.g. C:\presentation), moving the ppt and movie file to the folder,
then re-inserting the video.

Thank you, Lucy. Unfortunately, that still does not let me see the picture.
Any other suggestions? Also, is it possible to rotate a video clip? I have
one of a geyser that the photographer turner the camera vertically. It's a
great video, but it's on its side.

Thanks for your advice so far, but I now have a different version of my
problem. By using Insert Object, then Create From File I can get the movie
to run whilst in Normal view. But once I go to Slideshow, all I see is the
icon, which I can't get to run. The file name is short, and it is in the
same directory as the presentation file. Any further suggestions welcome!

To rotate the movie, use Windows Movie Maker
To insert your film, just use INSERT/MOVIE
By the way what is your movie: MOV? AVI? MPEG?
 
My movie is a .mpg file. Using Insert Movie just gets me a black screen.
Using Insert Object From File gets me a clip that will run in Normal View,
but not in Slideshow. Thanks. Sue

The issue is not the length of the file name but the path length - ie. the
complete address such as C:/anyuser/mydocuments.....etc /filename This
must be less then ca 128 characters when the movie is inserted. If, as
Lucy says, the movie file is in the same folder as the presentation then you
should be able to move that whole folder elsewhere and the link will hold.
But the golden rules are:
- Path length (not just file length) shorter than ca 128 characters when the
link was made
- Movie in same folder as presentation
- If you move the folder it is wise also to ensure that the resultant path
length is less than ca 128 chars also.

Hmmmm, I'm using 2007, and don't appear to have anything called Slideshow
Configuration. Sue

Hmm. You know, I think you could use my new Commando2007 utility.
It normally "translates" PPT 2003 to 2007 commands, but you could edit it
to
translate French 2007 (or 2003) to English 2007.

With the latest version, you could have multiple translation files, in
fact.

Well, I finally got both issues answered by using Windows Movie Maker and
converting to WMV, (mine was avi). This might help you also, Sue. Thanks
everyone.

Tried this, and everything else above, still no joy. The presentation had to
be given today, so I packed the guy off and told him that once he'd finished
giving the Powerpoint presentation he'll have to quit out of it and show the
video clips from his Desktop. I don't usually admit defeat, but sometimes I
think life is just tooooooo short to carry on trying to achieve the
impossible!
