I moved a HDD [Win2K/sp4] to a new motherboard using sysprep, etc. Loaded
new drivers, configured, etc

WHAT WORKS--
-Connect to cable internet WebPages [via Netgear RP114 router & cable
modem.]
-Connect OK to cable news server.
-Can ping the cable smtp & pop3 servers OK.

WHAT FAILS--
-Outlook Express does not retain password. Enter, check the box, close,
exit, & restart OE does not do it.
-Attempt to send a message gives error message:
"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'cox.net', Server:
'smtp.xxxx.xxx.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

-Attempt to get mail gives error message:
"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'cox.net', Server:
'pop.xxxx.xxx.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

-Other programs such as MailWasher give similar, non-connect error messages.

I should appreciate your help. TIA

Are you sure you should be using SSL for your pop3 and smtp?

You should probably just call Cox for the network settings (or look at their
web site).

Thanks, Scott--
The TCP/IP and other settings were OK [I have two other W2k boxes on the
LAN] No SSL boxes were checked, etc.

The problem was worse than that! Despite Norton AntiVirus 2003 on the job,
the w32.sobig.c had creamed the system and messed up the Norton AV -- which
messed up the Outlook Express e-mail functions. I could not reinstall the
downloaded Norton AV2003 or a Norton AV2001, despite following all the
Symantec instructions on their website.

I had to booger-pick the registry for all Symantec & for all Norton entries
[after backing up, of course!] and also remove all Norton/Symantec files
from the system. Everything works, now, without changing any TCP/IP
parameters.

Bought Norton AV2004, installed, and all is well.

In order to fix the non-retention of passwords, I used the technique in
Microsoft KB article 264672. That problem might have been the result of the
sysprep move to the new motherboard...

bruce
