Dear User Group,
I have a broken PC with Windows XP Pro retail version on the hard disk. The
motherboard seems to be defective. I bought a new PC with XP HE OEM version
pre-installed. Is it possible to upgrade the HE OEM version to PRO using the
same Windows XP Pro CD used originally to install on the now broken PC.
Obviously I cannot remove Pro from the broken PC before installing it on
the replacement PC.
Sincerely, Karl

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable under
any circumstances), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is
currently on (a moot point if the first PC is dead, of course), and
install it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

A retail Pro CD will upgrade a Home installation. You should check the
particular machine with the makers to make sure there are no problems
with any proprietary hardware needing special drivers, then if that is
OK, run the Pro CD from the Home system, take Install, continue with
Upgrade. When it comes to activation, if it is more than 120 days since
you last did it, you will find it will go through on the net just like
first time. If not, you will have to phone a toll-free number that will
be given, to explain it is out of use on the original macjhine which is
scrapped, and swap one long number for another to check back as you type
it in
