Move WinXP drive to new build PC

My 40GB drive, NTFS, has run WinXP Pro for 18mths, partitioned into C,
D, E drives with Partition Magic 7 (because I could not get XP to set
up logical drives when I upgraded from ME).
Now I want to move the hard drive into new system I have built (new
mobo, cpu, DDRAM, video card etc).
Tried "repair install" using Michael Stevens guides, to get XP to
recognise new system hardware but failed. XP Setup only showed C drive
as 40GB, no D or E. Also said found non-standard partition table and
boot record. I aborted repair at this point.
Is there anyway I can get the hard drive to recognise the new system
hardware, short of a clean install, which means losing all my
applications on the D drive?
Any help much appreciated.

Clean install is the best way to go when changing boards.

You are SUPPOSED to reformat your harddrive and do a fresh install of XP
when its used with a new motherboard. Otherwise you can look forward to
nasty Registry errors from now on.

I think the problem lies with the non-standard Partition Magic partitions.

Can you make a bootable diskette from PM7 that boots the 40GB HD with CD
support? I guess the 40GB booted with errors initially which is why you're
doing the Install-Repair?

Also, I think when you boot the XP CD it asks for 3rd party drivers,
where maybe you should say yes and insert the PM7 diskette or CD.

I have bootable PM7 disks but that did not help. PM7 could not read
the drive, nor could WinXP. I guess the aborted repair install screwed
up the files system. I have rebuilt my system with a new hard drive
and restored my applications and data - fortunately I had backed up
all the major items.

I would still like to get at the remaining data on the old drive, if
possible, but I have no idea if that can be done, short of asking the
FBI.
If I try to re-install WinXP on the old drive (it was NTFS, by the
way), I assume I will not be able to see any of the old data.
Can anyone advise me? Thanks.

To close out this saga, I tried 2 free download data recovery tools.

1.Ontrack's Easy Recovery Data Recovery ran on my good HDD and
identified the partitions and files structure on the bad HDD but I
could not recover files unless I bought the full package for $199.
2.Then tried iRecover from DIYDataRecovery.nl. I got the setup screen
but could not get any further. Anyway,it would only allow 1 directory
to be recovered free, so I closed it down.

However, next time I went into Windows Explorer on my good HDD, it
showed not only the good drive but also the bad drive, partitions,
directories, files. I was able to copy data to the good drive but
still cannot boot from the bad drive because WinXP cannot find a valid
system config file.
I will try again to Repair Install once I am sure I have got all the
data I want off the bad drive.
