Would holding down the SHIFT key when you drag/drop be acceptable?
It changes the function from COPY/PASTE to CUT/PASTE from one folder to
another...

Use a right-click drag-and-drop and you'll be prompted to move, copy,
create shortcut, or cancel. It's much safer to copy, then delete the
original.. that way, if there's a problem such as a bad write, you won't
lose the file completely.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Is there anywhere to change the drag and
drop permanently to cut instead of copy without having to hold down keys or
change my routine?

When i drag and drop a file to a folder on my workstation at work (xp pro
sp2), it moves the file. When i do the exact same thing on my home machine,
it copies the file, leaving me to have to delete the duplicate. How do i
change this to always move the file instead of copying it on my home machine?

In any version of Windows, when you left-mouse drag a file from one folder to another folder on the
same drive, it moves the file. When you left-mouse drag a file from one drive, to another drive
(any folder) it copies the file. (That can be changed by holding down the Shift or Ctrl key)

However, if you learn to right-mouse drag a file (either to another folder or to another drive) it
will always give you a menu choice (when you let go the mouse click) to either Copy, Move or Cancel.

Thank you for clarifying this. That is the one difference that i didn't think
of. My workstation is on one partition, my home machine is 2 partitions one
hard drive. I suppose there isnt a registry key to edit to appease the other
users on the home machine that are complaining about this? Or do i just need
to run on one partition and run backups regularly to another hard drive?

I don't think you can edit this feature.
I just made a habit of right-mouse dragging files and expect the menu option.
Actually the right-mouse menu option is nice as Cancel is one of the options in case you dropped the
file on the wrong folder.
