Move Maker 2 Won't Record

I'm using XP home edition on a Compaq Presario laptop. The audio device is
listed
as "Conexant" and there are several other entries for audio compression,
video compression,
and other compeonents. All of these are listed in the control panel hardware
device
listing as working. I also downloaded the latest drivers from the HP website
and
installed the.

The problem I have is that when I run Movie Maker (v2) and click on the
microphone
button (for recording from the mic input) there are two drop-down lists :
one to
select the audio device and the second to select the actual input device
(mic, line
in, etc.). When I go to select the mic input from the second list, there us
nothing
in it and just clicking on it brings up an error message. The program
doesn't crash
after the error dialog box is closed, but audio can't be recorded.

I've gone through the windows update process and there are no major updates
needed
at this point and I've installed most of the minor updates and I mentioned
above
ave downloaded the latest audio driver for this model laptop (2170US).

Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated!
