Move data from one computer to another?

I am trying to move some files from my old laptop running Windows 98 to my newer laptop running Windows 2000. I thought I could use a USB flashdrive and physically move it from one computer to the other.
However I can not locate a driver to run my flashdrive on my old computer and I can not go online with my Bell South DSL as the laptop just won't run it from the CD.
Any suggestions? Could I connect both laptops with their USB ports and send the data from one to the other?
