I have MS XP Home Edition with a crowded C drive. Ample space on a D drive
and I would like to move most of the bigger files and or applications on C
to D. Is there a way to determine the size and a way to move with safety?

Hello,

This will tell you the size of the folders:

If you're not sure what you would like to move, post back with what
you want to do. Some system folders (My Documents, My Music, etc.)
require a special routine to move them.

Just to add, you can move some of these folders with TweakUI that you
can get here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

You want the 147KB link on the right-hand side.

In TweakUI, go to My Computer => Special Folders

You can move data files easily. However programs can not readily be
moved. The problem is that programs are not self-contained, but have
many supporting files and references to where are, and if you move
them, those references will be wrong (the references are not all in
one place--many are in the registry, but others are elsewhere). So
most of the programs (all but an occasional tiny self-contained one)
will no longer run. There is, however, software available to search
out, and find those references and change them accordingly (one such
program, for example, is called COA2). My experience with such
programs is that they find most of the references, but not all of
them.

For that reason, I recommend that you do *not* attempt to do this. The
proper way, and the best way, to accomplish what you want is to
uninstall the programs, then reinstall on the drive where you want
them.

I would like to move Documents and Settings as this is the largest block.
Second choice to move would be Windows. Can you lead me to this special
routine that you mentioned?

Hello again,

I would move My Music, My Video with TweakUI. You can move the My
Documents folder with these instructions:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_mydocs.htm

I wouldn't attempt to move the entire Documents and Settings - your
profile. The above folders are surely where all the space is being
used.

You can't move the Windows folder without re-installing XP completely
to the other drive.

You are using Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138, correct?

It is amazingly easy to move the location that Outlook Express uses to store
messages.
