Move a NIC card...reactivate by phone!

I moved my nic card over one PCI slot and XP says I made a major
configuration change and must reactivate within 3 days. Hey Bill,
moving a NIC card one slot is NOT a major configuration change!
I have made no other changes since the previous activation; only
the NIC was moved. I know the NIC weighs heavily in the voting,
but I didn't know it had veto powers!
So I tried to reactivate with my cable modem and it didn't work.
My internet access worked great, it just couldn't connect to MS.
I tried it several times, always the same result...nada. Tried to
activate with my dialup modem, that too didn't work. So, I had to
call MS, get a bunch of new numbers. Thanks MS, this is a really
neat system :(

That's why I'm sticking with my 98SE/2K dual boot setup for many more
years, rather than play "Russian Roullette" with my computer system.

MOve it back. The mechanism by which enumeration looks at things is
such that it probably failed to get noticed.

I did move it back, but activation was still required. Apparently, once
the
"configuration change activation" is tripped, there's no way out but to
reactivate.

It's not quite that simple Kurt, but I appreciate your humor. I moved
the NIC
for ease of installing a Digicam security system PCI card. I mean
really, who
would have thought that moving the NIC would become such a pain in the
posterior?
Yeah, sure, 20-20 hindsinght...don't move the NIC you dummy.

Still, it would be very interesting if anyone actually had an
acceptable solution to this problem.

Physically moving a NIC, doesn't remove it from the Registry.
Windows "Remembers" all NIC's and their associated Local
Area Network settings. If you want to move a NIC from one
slot to another you should remove it from Device Manager, &
edit the Registry to remove the LAC and the adapter from the
PNP device table. Re-installing the same card in a different PCI
slot would only change it's Device Instance ID, not the actual
MAC Address of the card. If I'm not mistaken, it is the MAC
address that is factored into the Activation hash code.

Sorry, I wasn't making fun of you, just the advice given. PA shouldn't
be behaving the way your describing, but your not the first person
that's had PA going off when it shouldn't either.

You did get yourself activated by phone though, right? You may have to
do it again the next time you want to move something. I wish I could be
of more help to you. Good Luck.

No problem kurt. Yes, I was able to get it activated by phone. That is
the first time I've not been able to activate by cable modem. I asked
the gal at MS if theywere having a problem with auto-activation and she
said she didn't think so. I keep the same volumeID for each
activation...using Alex Nichol's trick for carrying
forward the same volumeID (label c:).

Thanks to R. McCarty. Your comment regarding removing the Nic from
device manager is what I should have done.

There is a solution. There are several programs out there in cyberspace
that allow XP users to get around activation. I'm not telling you what
they are that's for you to find out.

My point is that activation doesn't stop piracy or scumbags from ripping
off MS, it only harasses and anoys legit users like me that shell out
$200 fo their product.
