Mouseover to expand grouped taskbar icons?

The grouping of task bar icons is a nice space-saving feature, but it
invokes a penalty I can't live with: Accessing any item in a
group/stack requires two mouse clicks instead of one.

The way this should work is to expand taskbar groups when the mouse
pointer is over them.

Please, is there any way to make it do this, either with registry
tweaks, or third-party software?

Taskbar|Properties|Taskbar then uncheck the box for "Group similar taskbar
buttons"

That turns it off, and gives me the overcrowded taskbar again. I was
asking for a way to use the grouping feature without the need to click
to open each group. Ideally, a mouseover would expand a group, and if
an item was then clicked or closed, the group would remain open until
the cursor was moved off it.
It should work just like an un-grouped bar, without the need for
additional clicks. As it is now, I have to click to expand the group
every time I need to access or close a window within it. As it is
now, it's unusable, but I'd like to find a way to make it so.

Sorry there's no such option. It's one way or the other. I do like your idea
though.
