Hi Carole,
Is your mouse connected to a switch box? If so then there are some known
issues with that. See:

You can also try the Input Device Troubleshooter in the Help and Support
Center (Start -> Help and Support). Just search for 'Mouse Troubleshooter'
and you should see the Input Device Troubleshooter.
