Having strange things just started today. When I click just once on a file
it opens the file up (so if I manage to select 3 files in windows explorer
it opens them all up) and if I click on an email in my OE inbox it opens up
the email even though I didn't click twice.

Checked mouse settings in control settings to make sure I haven't turned on
single click and its still on double click and I don't think it is hardware
trouble (i.e. faulty mouse) does it sound like I have a Virus?

cheers,

Andy.

Suggest you confirm by substituting a 'known-good' rodent before
concluding that it isn't a mouse problem.

Just to eliminate the mouse, I have just now taken the rodent off the
desktop PC & hooked it up to my lappie and its working fine..... - so its
not the mouse at fault. Funny enough earlier on today I was on the next and
the mouse done a crazy kind of dancing around the screen for a second or 2
and then after that the double clicking started. - Now where did I put that
trap!!

Switches wear out and the switch activated by the left mouse button
gets more use than any other. One symptom is the "contact bounce"
which appears to the software as a double click. You could go to the
mouse properties and change the double click timing to "slow" but the
ultimate solution is probably a new mouse.

Thanks for the replies but I have ruled out that its a mouse probs because I
have tried the said mouse on another PC (i.e. my laptop) and it works fine
so it has either got to be a virus or spyware on my desktop PC I reckon.

Could be the mouse driver software. Could be an option isn't really
set as you think. I would try a new mouse. Borrow one, if necessary.
Oh, though that probably won't be conclusive as most mice come with
software for .. that .. mouse.

Maybe you can remove the cover and clean it? The switch...

I know of no viruses or spyware that would do what you describe.

Hey. It could also be a *Windows* option! In Win2K, Explorer > Tools >
Folder Options. Right there on the first tab is a radio button for
Single or Double click to open a program. I'll bet this is the answer.
