I just ran the "Microsoft Update" and downloaded a
critical patch----I actually need to download 41 critical
items--but first I neede to download one patch only.
After doing this, I re-booted my computer, and now the
mouse is not recognized. It lights up during the initial
start up, but then goes out.

Any helpt will be appreciated.

Try to install an updated mouse driver for that optical
mouse, and if needed get and use a cheap regular ball type
PS2 mouse to be able to do this, then turn the PC off and
switch back to your optical one and update driver in the
device manager. This is vital if using a USB mouse.
