I just bought a wireless/optical mouse that (to my surprise)
came with no product-specific software. WXP permits some user
choices, but my previous mouse software allowed much more
tailoring. However, it seems to be product-specific and won't
allow motion control of the new mouse, so I uninstalled it.

Is there anything out there?

Does the manufacturer's website offer driver downloads?

What Brand-X manufacturer might this be?

House brand from local shop. Advantage is that this one has a
motion sensor that turns OFF the LED after a bit - saving
battery life. My other optical/wireless mouse eats batteries.

MouseIMP offers quite a bit of functionality for all mice, and
it /appears/ to be freeware as indicated on this website:

My personal favorite for mouse functionality is StrokeIt, which
is a global mouse gesture program. Pity it doesn't support mouse4
on my new Logitech dual optical though.

Actually, there's a huge list of mouse utilities here:

Try downloading Logitech's Mouseware. Even if you don't have a Logitech
mouse it still works for a lot of them. Just install as something
fairly similar to what you have. The best features are disabling mouse
acceleration for games and setting a higher "refresh" rate for older PS2
mice.

There is no charge for a download of Microsoft's Intellipoint software and
it works with almost any mouse. I'm using a Labtec optical mouse that came
with no software of its own. Works perfectly with Intellipoint.

Most "nameless" mice seem to be rebrands or clones of CHIC

If the drivers/applet work then you have control of the extra buttons
for a varity of features.
