Mouse still on after shutdown

After all these years I finally decided to ask this question.

When I turn my computer off using Start/Turn Off Computer/Turn Off, the read
light on my USB Microsoft Mouse remains on. Why is this? I suppose it is
because the USB ports stay hot after shutdown unless power is completely
removed from the computer either by unplugging or using the switch on the
back on the power supply.

The front mounted on/off switch may / does not completely remove the
power to the PC. These switches usually places the PC in a "stand-by"
power off state, where the PC will start up faster than just waiting
for the power to start up. (note: this is not to be confused with the
"stand-by" / hibernate power "saving" modes in Windows.)

power to the PC. These switches usually places the PC in a "stand-by"
power off state, where the PC will start up faster than just waiting
for the power to start up. (note: this is not to be confused with the
"stand-by" / hibernate power "saving" modes in Windows.)

Thank you. I was referring to turning off the computer, not by the front
panel switch, but by using Start/Turn Off Compute/Turn menus. Does what you
say apply in this case?

Yes. Obvious signs:
1. Most motherboards have at least one LED (visible only if the
case cover is removed) to confirm that power is available, even
if not switched on at the power supply unit.
2. Certain manufacturers (e.g. Compaq) have since 2000
supplied no on/off switch for the PSU. In order to remove all
power you have to disconnect the power cord. (This makes
sense when PSUs are made to supply constant power as
in #1, switched on or off.

Thus it seems normal for PS2 mice connected to the MB to
be powered up all the time. (USB mice would go power off
when the USB socket is powered down.)

I think that is intended so that when first turning on the PC the mouse
is loaded and ready.

It allows you to turn on the computer using a mouse click or keyboard
hot key, instead of having to press the power button.

The front panel switch does what you set it to do in Power
Options. If it's set to Shut Down, it will turn off the power.
Unless the power supply switch at the back is turned off,
or the PC is unplugged, the 5 volt standby power will keep
the PS/2 and USB ports active when the system is powered
off, so that the keyboard or mouse can start the computer.
Those settings are in the BIOS because it's strictly a
hardware function.

LOL. This has nothing to do with your PC. This is normal. Unplug your PC from the
Power Source and you will still have the light on. Take out the batteries if you do
not want to see the light after shutting off the PC. This light is independent from
your PC

That is odd. My mouse has no batteries!
