Mouse/Shutdown Problem

Having problems with winxp shutdown. When I turn off the
computer it shuts down but the mouse stays on & if I move
it, it turns the computer back on. I have a Logitech
Optical mouse PS/2 version 9.70. Any help appreciated.

I checked the power scheme & I have Standby set to
Never. I could have accidently clicked standby when I
shut it down. How do I get it changed back? I have
shutdown several times & it still is doing it.

I checked the power scheme & I have Standby set to
Never.

Me too, but other settings will still counteract that, or at least do
a good imitation of standby.

This is about going into the start menu and choosing "turn off",
right? That takes you to another menu with three options, turn off,
restart, and standby. At that point you choose turn off, and the
machine takes a few minutes to save its settings; then it goes off
along with any lights.

You might want to check another area of Control Panel\ Power Options,
the Advanced tab where it gives you choices about what happens when
you press the power button. You'll likely want this set to shut
down. (There's no reason to use the power button unless no response to
the menu in the paragraph above, but I thought I'd ask.) If you
change this setting, click apply and okay your way out.

Yes, I go to start menu & choose "turn off", after the
computer shuts off, lights go off on everything except
for the optical mouse.

I went to Power Options to the Advanced tab & both
choices for power button & sleep mode is
set to Shutdown. I have also unchecked the"Enable
Hibernate" option. I've done everything I know to do.
It was doing fine until yesterday & the only
thing I know I did yesterday was I downloaded a windows
update.

Does it take a while to shut down, though? Standby is immediate. I've
never used hibernate, don't know about that one. Anyway, I have a
Logitech optical mouse, and it definitely isn't glowing when my system
is shut down.

It occurs to me that if your system will start up with the mouse, it
should also wake up by the other usual means, like the keyboard, which
shouldn't happen if it is shut down. It's just easier to jostle the
mouse than hit keystrokes. (You could put the mouse on a small piece
of foam, I guess. I've also read that they won't react if they're put
on their backs.)

XP home doesn't show a choice of sleep modes, so I can't comment on
that one.

While I do think your situation is related to the shutdown function,
you can likely keep your mouse from starting up things via Control
Panel \ System \ Hardware \ Device Manager (a fast way to System is
Windowskey Pause). Inside the DM, expand Mice. Right-click on your
mouse. Choose Properties.

Under the power management tab you'll see an option for this device to
be used to bring the computer out of standby. If you want, clear it,
but I think it would be a very good idea first to identify other means
of starting up.
I have also unchecked the"Enable
Hibernate" option. I've done everything I know to do.

Which one? (As the owner of a similar mouse, I'd appreciate knowing.)
You might want to wait before doing this, but the hotfix could be
uninstalled via add\remove... or you could use a Restore point.

Here's a reference area for shutdown problems that I often see
recommended in newsgroups:

Also, it's a good idea to have a secondary backup if you're making
changes since sometimes Restore fails. Erunt is often recommended (I
use it, saved me once).

Hi Maureen, Think I have my problem solved. I uninstalled the mouse &
changed the PS/2 port to USB. I shut it down & the light went off on the
mouse. I think the windows update did have something to do with it also. I
uninstalled it & a box popped up & said that they detected the Logitech
Messenger & the program may not run properly if I uninstalled. Wanted to
know if I wanted to continue. The hotfix # is Q819696$. Thanks for all the
help.

Glad it turned out well for you.
