For 2 years I have a Dell PC with a Microsoft (cable) mouse PS/2. My OS is
Windows XP Pro. Yesterday no problems, shutted down my PC.

This morning: Windows boots like normal, but the mouse stayes freezed. I
looked in Hardware-Manager: no mouse. I've tried to search for Changed
Hardware: nope.

Shutted down my PC, plugged in an other PS-2 cable mouse: doesn't function
either. Both of these mouses function on another PC.

While Windows was still active, I plugged in an USB-mouse: this one is
recognized and functions well. Shutted down my PC, restart PC, Windows won't
boot up after the BIOS screen! I get no errors/ bsod's, just a blinking
cursor on a black screen.

I removed the USB-mouse, restart the PC, Windows is booting again! When I
plug the USB-mouse it is recognized again and is functioning.

Anyone an idea about what is going on??

Really strange to me..

Looks like the PS/2 mouse port has died. That is usually a bad
solder joint where the connector is soldered onto the motherboard.

Thats usually because the driver isnt seeing the mouse properly.

Try installing the mouse properly.

Nope, not too strange really.

Thanks Rod.

I will try first to install the mouse driver with the system's driver CD.
