Running Win XP home and all was working just fine. Today my HP mouse
is acting erratic - it jumps and locks up and I can only get it back
and functional if I disconnect it from the USB port and reconnect it
to another USB port. It seems to have began this behavior when I first
started the PC and got a popup message down on the taskbar telling me
that I should connect the USB device to a high speed port to get
better performance - it was refering to the printer.

Not sure why disconnecting the mouse and connecting to a different USB
port temporarily solves the problem - however, it locks up again after
a few minutes and requires a disconnect and reconnet again.

Can anyone suggest what is happening and a possible fix?

Thanks,

Mary

Probably the first thing to do is check it with a different USB mouse
and see if that takes care of it. There's a good chance it will.

Perhaps unrelated to your mouse issue...

The annoying printer related message indicates your USB port drivers
are not of the "Enhanced" version. The best place to get them is
usually WWW site that matches your hardware manufacturer.

Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager.

Expand the Universal serial bus controller section. Any ?s, !s, or
Xs? Do you see the word "Enhanced"?

If no Enhanced, and your computer is of fairly recent vintage
hardware, you can probably easily update the USB driver to satisfy
that printer message pop up. Don't know if it will do anything for
your mouse, but it is a USB mouse.

Can you check and update your USB driver version?

I wonder if the usb printer driver could be looking for the printer on various
usb ports and upsetting the mouse?
If it were my pc, then I would uninstall the printer driver, disconnect the
printer and try rebooting to see if the mouse then works ok.

Thanks TWAYNE and JOSE for your responses - I am trying a PS/2 port
mouse and so far it seems to be working without lockups - keeping my
fingers crossed!
