I just purchased an HP ball mouse.. generic except for the brand name if you
know what I mean.. but it works ok except for when I am scrolling on a
page.. or on my hard drive. I have disabled the wheel, as I never use it..
but when I am looking at the page, the page moves eratically, (up and down)
once I click on the page it stops doing that.. is there a setting somewhere
I can tick! thanks so much.. Rainy

ps. looking forward to when I can purchase an optical mouse sometime in the
future but up till then, I guess I am stuck with the ball mouse.. :(

What's preventing you from purchasing an optical mouse now? You can get
them for ten bucks.

thanks for the info on an optical mouse.. but I don't understand what
refilled means..?
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=460990/zip_code=52732/qlty=c/
turns out with shipping it's $10.98 which is not bad... will save this in my
favorites for next month.. I had a Microsoft wireless intellimouse before,
and I loved it..

in the mean time.. I would really love some help with the mouse I now own...
I just bought it, and don't have money to replace it... Please.. if you know
something? please jump right on in.. :) thanks Rainy

They are even less than $10.You can buy a Microsoft Optical mouse for as
little as $5.99 US.

See, for example,

Shouldn't need drivers for a generic mouse. Especially if you're not using
the wheel or extra buttons (if there are any)... Wait. How did you disable
the wheel? With the mouse software? If yes, maybe you should check for
updated drivers. Or uninstall the drivers and try the generic ones that XP
will provide.

What else besides trying mouse drivers could you do? Hmmm...

What about "enable smooth scrolling" in Internet Options>Advanced (last
choice before "use HTTP 1.1 settings")?

Or Display> Settings> Advanced> Troubleshoot and turn down hardware
acceleration a notch or two? This sounds unrelated but sometimes the
display drivers and mouse drivers fight over who's in charge. If reducing
hardware acceleration helps, look for an updated display driver. After it's
installed, bump up acceleration again to see if the mouse problem is gone.

Hi Sharon... long time no see! :)

Well actually I figured it out.. it was taking so long for someone to
respond, I needed to find the answers right away.. No criticism intended to
anyone, just couldn't have my pages jumping up and down that way..:) lol It
was driving me nuts!!! :)

Also whoever it was that suggested I buy the Intellimouse Optical Mouse at
that site, for $5.99, well I did.. not too much, too good of a deal to pass
up. I couldn't really afford it, but I found a way.. :) expecting delivery
in a couple of days.. YAHOO!

Back to the mouse..
I think I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it a couple of times..It
might not have been installed corrected.. I used xp's driver for the
mouse...
'
Yes smooth scrolling was ticked..
Yes I Used the mouse software to disable the wheel, and played with some of
the settings to find a place where the page didn't do that.. I don't
remember at this point what I did.. sorry! the mouse was such a mess, I
don't think it mattered what I did.. it couldn't have been worse... and I
didn't think anyone was going to ask me about it.. :)

I just looked at hardward acceleration and turned it down a notch, maybe
this will help the mouse do even a better job.. it was up all the way..

Thanks a lot Sharon, Rainy

You're welcome, Rainy. You'll want to turn hardware acceleration back up
when the new mouse arrives. Turning it down is just a stopgap until new
mouse drivers or new display drivers allow you to turn it back up again.
Since you've had this mouse before (right?) and it worked well for you -
you should be able to return that setting to full with no problems.

I've never seen the option to disable the wheel in the generic mouse
drivers. Just a setting for how many lines to scroll with each turn (or to
turn a whole page at a time). Doesn't mean that it never shows up - just
means it has never appeared with the mouse(s?!) that I've used.

More general info: In some cases, installing drivers adds all options for a
mouse to Control Panel> Mouse. In other cases, there is extra software to
control those extra features. Intellipoint, for example, adds extra
features that do not exist with basic mouse drivers. Logictech used to call
theirs "mouseware." I think it has a new name now. IOW, sometimes you have
to uninstall that extra software as well as the manufacturer's drivers to
get back to basic generic drivers. The basic drivers are boring (just basic
functions supported) but if you just use right/left click and the wheel -
they're all that's needed and are usually very stable.

Well, anyhow - good luck with the new mouse when it arrives. Enjoy!

I created a screenshot so you could see the disable wheel feature in my
generic mouse... just so you will know for sure.. :)

<pouting>
I never get the good stuff in my generic drivers!
<sniff, sniff>

Nice chatting with you too and thanks for the screenshot.
