I recently purchased a new Microsoft Mouse - one of the Intellimouse devices
with sideways scrolling. It's excellent.

But recently, it has failed to pick-up my first click and I have to click
twice. This happens intermittently.

Is this a known problem with this hardware? Is there a cure - short of
returning it to the shop from which I purchased it?

Cheers.

Have you got any other wireless products connected? I had two microsoft
wireless desktops connected and I was having the same problem. When I
reverted to having one the problem was gone, I didn't really need two sets
anyway!

Make sure the mouse connector is firmly in it's port. If it is, you could
try reinstalling the driver for it.

Check for old driver entries in the Device Manager using,"Safemode"
and make sure any old software has been removed from the Control
panel/Add Remove Programs list.

It's a wired mouse but I do have a wireless LAN card installed. Could this
be the problem?

No driver. I'm using the built-in XP driver.

Is the problem reproducible with another mouse?

I've had Microsoft mice switches partially fail and needed a
harder click... usually I'd click it normally the first time,
then be reminded of the problem and click harder the second time,
so then it worked.

If it was a retail mouse it should be under warranty from
Microsoft. If you fax the relevant info and a scan of the mouse
bottom to their product support center they'll send you a
replacement, likely without any postage or fees, etc, not even
having to return the old mouse. Don't have the number any more
though but a Google search should find it.

Yes, harder click works. Is this what you mean by "partial fail"?

It's a retail mouse. But I live in the UK. Does MS do the same for UK
customers?

Cheers.

Partial failure would be that the switch no longer works as
specified, that the amount of pressure or stroke lenth of the
contact is now longer than the acceptable amount. It is a
consideration of the switch component itself, regardless of what
device it's used in.

I don't know if Microsoft offers same replacement method in the
UK, but if the unit is covered under warranty they still have to
honor it, correct?

Resolution would then be the same, try another mouse or that
mouse in another system to isolate the cause, then contact
Microsoft service center in your area. Even if you had to ship
mouse to them it "should" be cheaper than purchasing another one.
Then again, now is the time to consider if you want another
one... myself, I prefer Logitech, especially the MX series.
