Hi All,
I have just built a comp on an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe M/B. CPU is running at
31C. The problem is every now and again while using the mouse , the
pointer will just start to fly around the desktop opening up menus and
I have not clicked on anything. Then it will stop as quick as it
started. Has anyone seen this problem before. Thanks

Only time I've had issue with that is when the batteries are running low. Have
you tried it with a known good mouse? or if its a PS/2 mouse have you tired a
USB mouse to check if its the port?

Batteries?
in what?
The mouse?
what other mouse can it be if not usb or ps2?

Not everyone uses a cordless mouse and there are no batteries for any other
thing.

wow ok guess I made that a bit to complex fer ya ;)

Yes I know not everyone uses one, but the behaivor described matchs that of a
wireless with low batteries, since no info was given as to what kind of mouse
was used I just threw out what happens to me and other suggestions.

As for the usb or ps/2 thing, I thought I was clear. If a PS/2 mouse was used,
try a USB to see if the PS/2 port is at fault. I've seen many motherboard have
the PS/2 ports go bad. Futher you can reverse that in case the mobo USB port
isnt working/or motheroard just doesnt like to run off USB mice. Again, seen a
few boards that just wouldnt work nicely with USB mice.

And again, see if a known good mouse can be used. May just be the current mouse
has gone screwy and needs to be replaced.

Apologies for stating the obvious but have you tried another mouse ?
Alec
Yes, I tried a different mouse and the same happened. By the way the
mouse is not a cordless one. Thanks

Are you sure you're not "hacked"? My nephew used to break into his mothers
computer and did things like this to freak her out. I'm sure its only a
slight possibility, but you never know :)

Check for resource conflicts. Find out what IRQ is being used for the
interface that your mouse is using (probably PS/2 or USB), and see if
anything else is using the same IRQ. If so, that might be causing the
problem even if Windows doesn't "complain" about it. Although IRQ
sharing is usually not a problem, some devices don't play well with
others.

Hi,
Tell us your OS, what peripherals you have(on board or as a PCI, AGP
cards) Also how did you set up the system BIOS? Did you say no to PnP
BIOS?, how about ACPI?, etc.

I would strongly suspect a virus if you've connected to the internet. Do
you have a recent virus scanner with updates?

I went out and bought a brand new mouse, and it works perfectly. So it
would look like I had two faulty mice. Thanks everyone for your
suggestions. I appreciate it.

Hi,
It appears you have resolved the problem for now.
FYI: win2k (and I assume winxp) will assign any device it finds running and
dosen't already know as a mouse.
So if you start the system with a GPS that is running, plugged into the
machine, Windows assumes it is a mouse and the cursor goes wacky.
