I have recently got Windows XP Professional, which has been working fine until now.
Recently every time I power on the mouse pointer permanently has a "eggtimer" beside the normal arrow. I can use internet and messenger ok, but Word, Excel and Outlook crash a lot and don't close properly. I have run a virus scan which did not show up anything.
Can anyone help?

First check your pointer scheme. {Control Panel, Mouse, Pointer tab}. If you
are using the Windows Default, an arrow with eggtimer means that you have an
application running in the background. A application running in the
background could explain your Office application problems.

CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up Windows Task Manger which will indicate what
applications and processes are running.

Suspect you may have picked up a pest. If so, Pest Patrol or Ad-Aware
should help.
