Hi, I am really needind help as to why on more than one
new machine i bought, this has happened. i have tried
several different mice, including PS2, and USB, as well as
erasing from the device manager. The pointer juist turns
into a black box off and on.

AFAIK this is a video driver issue. A more recent driver version for your
card may fix the problem.
It may also be generated by the way some older software handles mouse pointer
calls. To find out if this is so, note what software you are running or have
been running prior to the problem behaviour. Then if possible get an updated
version of the software.
It may be a side effect of upgrading (if that's the correct term - bah!) to
SP3 or SP4 (though those SPs usually just mess up CD drive access.) In that
case, a search of MS's support website may yield a cure. You should check
there anyhow, come to think of it - lots of useful stuff there:

There are probably other possible causes, but these are the only ones I know
about.
