Hi I have a Sony Vaio K-23 series notebook computer that I have had for a few
years. A little while back my mouse pad started acting up where every now and
then it just wouldnt work. It would jump as i moved it and it wouldnt go
where I wanted it to go. but then after a couple of minutes it would start
working fine again. Now it is doing that same thing but it is doing it more
often where i even left it off overnight and then tried it in the morning and
it still is barely working. How would i go about diagnosing and fixing this
problem? Thanks for the help in advance.

I take it by your use of the term "mouse Pad" you are referring to the
little window on your laptop that you move your finger around on to make
the cursor on the screen move around?

It sure sounds like that mouse pad is about to fail.

Is there a way to add a mouse to your lap top so you'll have a mouse to
try and diagnose the problem further?

Run task manager and minimize it in the tray.
When the mouse acts up, look at the cpu usage and see
who's doin' it..
Some programs are such resource hogs that they won't give
the mouse driver any cpu time. Viruses can do this this.
Automatic program updates can hog your system.
Networking, especailly wireless can hog your system
when it gets confused.

Thanks for the help and quick response. When I check the task manager nothing
is jumping out at me. The programs that are taking up the most space are
explorer.exe and svchost.exe like always and the amounts are not extremely
high They are around 30,000K so they shouldnt be causing the problem. I do
have another mouse connected to the computer so I can use it but I would like
to have the mouse pad working to travel. Thanks for the help again

can't hurt to reinstall the mouse drivers.
Do you have a bootable dos program with mouse support?
Or boot a live linux CD to see if the mouse works there.
Problem is that failure is not conclusive 'cause linux may not properly
support your touchpad. But if the mouse works, you have learned something.

If the connected mouse works then it may be the mouse pad malfunctioning?

"o",
If this problem occurred after installing an updated driver (especially
suspect are video drivers) or after installing a new/updated software, then
try doing a System Restore to a time when the mouse was functioning.

Win+F1 || enter System Restore in the search box || carefully read the help
and follow procedure given there to restore your system to a previous state
if applicable

If you would just like to rollback a driver, then
Win+R || type in devmgmt.msc and hit enter || work your way to desired
device, right-click and rollback the driver.
