Mouse Not Detected on Restart

A7N8X-X motherboard, connected through a KVM to keyboard and mouse, along
with 3 other computers, A7N8X-Deluxe, A8V, A8V. The -X is fine from a cold
start, detecting both keyboard and mouse. If I restart, the keyboard is
detected but the mouse is not. All other PC's have no detection problems at
all in a restart.
I've tried different known-good mice. No change in behavior.
Switching between running computers with the KVM raises no issues. Only the
restart on the one PC loses the mouse. This is a recent symptom. The PC that
now has issues *used to* work correctly on a restart.
I've swapped KVM cables and ports. Makes no difference. Problem follows the
PC, not the port or cable. I've reinstalled the OS on the problem PC. No
change.
Here's the real kicker. If I attach a mouse directly to the PS2 port, it
*is* detected on restart.
I'd blame the KVM except that it works flawlessly with the other three PC's
on any port.
I'm stumped and ready to buy another motherboard.
What am I missing?
Any suggestions welcome.

You haven't switched to a new mouse have you? If so, read on. If
not, ignore what follows.

The "switch" in "KVM switch" is sort of a misnomer. It turns out that
these things have keyboard and mouse EMULATORS in them. They don't
simply pass every signal on every PS2 pin of the attached mouse to the
computers like old-fashioned mechanical A-B switches did -- i.e., a
PS2 KVM switch will not work with any and all PS2 keyboards and mice
but only with the ones with which the built-in emulator is compatible.
I was terribly disappointed to learn this when my MS Natural keyboard
wore out and I purchased a new MS Multimedia Natural keyboard. It
wasn't just the special functions of the new keyboard that wouldn't
work; the keyboard wouldn't work at all unless it was attached
directly to one of the computers.

Thanks for the info on KVM's. I wasn't aware of the emulator thing. Although
I have changed keyboard and mouse recently, the problem follows the one PC
regardless of which mouse I use (tried 3), and persists even if I change the
KVM port and cable. The 3 other PC's work correctly through the KVM with all
3 mice, so I believe it's something to do with that one PC.

Just a guess here. Are all 3 PC's set up to use the same voltage
setting for the mouse and keyboard(+5V or +5VSB)? I had some issues
before with mouse transferring with my KVM and 2 PC's that were not set
the same. I never came to an understanding as to why but you might
check your jumpers to see if that's what's happening to yours.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rob.
Unfortunately, changing the jumper didn't change the behavior.
I did discover a workaround while testing, though :)
If I switch the KVM to a different PC while the problem PC restarts, then
switch back after the restart is complete, I have the mouse?!!?
Go figure!

Is it a Starview PS2 KVM?

I have a couple, both exhibit similar behavior - to the point I use them
as KV switches and put up with multiple rodents :-)

Nope. It's a Zonet. I considered multiple mice, but the thought of getting
PS2 extension cables, etc. has me staying with the "switch away and come
back" workaround :)

It sounds as though you found a satisfactory workaround. However, if
all the computers are on a home LAN, you also have the option of a
couple of software solutions in the form of RealVNC (www.realvnc.com)
(free).and XP's Remote Desktop feature.
However, these solutions really work as smoothly as a KVM, and I'd
probably prefer the workaround you found.
