Mouse keeps stopping

It's driving me nuts. Sometimes it happens 10 times in a couple of minutes,
other times, once every half an hour. I've tried another mouse and it
refuses to work,..the light switching is working OK, even while it is
stopped. I've tried other USB ports, and tapping the mouse.

This mouse and PC has always been a bit suss. It has always had problems
with the arrow disappearing for a few seconds.

Any ideas please?

Thanx Jason

Dust bunnies and lint inside the ball/wheel area that interfere with
the rotation or counting the dots as it moves.

What kind of mouse do you have?
old style mechanical ball kind or optical?
Wireless - infra red or radio?
or Wired?

Its a wired light-source type. No mechanical parts. I've tried blowing the
hole underneath with the light source. Once you unplug it from the USB port,
then replug it, all's well for the time being.

Update drivers from manufacturer's website?
If you don't know the manufacturer .. I recommend:
http://www.drivereasy.com/

Are you using the standard mouse cursors for Windows? some others can cause
problems.

Did you ever accidentally download those pesky cursor malware?

Is you computer free from malware? I recommend scanning with
superantispyware (free version) in safe mode.

Has your computer enough RAM? If you are running many programs with not
enough RAM, things can appear to freeze on the computer.

Yes, when that happens, you get different symptoms like a faltering arrow
which can move rapidly, or backwards. The thing it is doing now, is to stop
moving all together,..no thumb-wheel action also. The light works normally
tho. I have to unplug it, then re-plug it into a USB port. I've tried
different USB ports to no avail.

Thanx, I'll check them out :-)

Yeah,..Window Large (arrow-head)

Did you ever accidentally download those pesky cursor malware?

My g/daughter had some wierd cursors working at one stage :-(

I have AVG free version,..and "You are protected" There are a couple of
"white file ?" entries in the virus vault.

Could be,..the PC has been under attack. I can only view cached sites as
there is a redirect to rude sites going on.

Seems likely that your mouse problems are caused by malware infection(s).
(as above I recommend scanning with superantispayware from
http://www.superantispyware.com/ in Windows safe mode).

Like you I use free version of AVG anti-virus ...... Superantispyware does
not provide the "real time protection" that AVG does for free but it does a
better job of clearing up malware. .. No antivirus can prevent the user from
clicking on the wrong thing if she absolutely insists ;)

One more possibility...another device hooked up to a USB port may be
causing the computer to react improperly. Maybe it would be worth the
effort to check this out. Remove all other USB devices except your
mouse and keyboard and see if this stabilizes things. If it does,
re-connect the USB devices one at a time and try to locate the one
that is causing the conflicts.

Thanx!! That was it. I plugged the mouse back into its OS/2 socket and all
was OK. Many thanx to all for your help :-)

Then i'ts defective

I'd try a mouse that actually works

After I replaced the mouse and placed it into its OS/2 socket, another fault
disappeared as well. The PC would disconnect itself from the ISP even tho
the 2 small monitors icon was still in the status line.. The modem is in an
USB port. It seems that there was some sort of USB contention? Anyway all is
well now and I thank you all for your assistance ..

How old is the mouse? The tiny wires inside the cord can break and touch
erratically due to the flexing. I had one where the wire wore out.

I get what you mean about the mouse. I maybe storked. I'll test it out on
another PC when the opportunity arises. Thanx for your help...

If you have a choice between using a USB connection or an Ethernet
connection from the modem to the PC, use the Ethernet connection. It causes
less problems overall and is faster AFAIK.

Thanx for the tip. When I'm game, I'll give it a go :-) It has an EN
connection.

wish I had an OS/2 socket on my machine :)

Ahhh yes,..brain-fart in my case,..I have a looooong way to go to be
anywhere near profficient in doing the most basic tasks. PCs are the
mystery-bag of the post-modernist era :-)
